Mexico’s musical group COPAL, blends many favorable styles of music to form a new trendy sound called Funkloric – a name given by Alex who is one of the guitar players and the bands spokes person. They have captured lots of attention throughout the region.
A group of musicians came together in Xalapa – Veracruz, Mexico in 2010. Their backgrounds were influenced by many brands of sound, which makes their unique rhythm a novelty amongst all other mainstream music.
We just happened to visit one of our favorite spots on Playa del Carmen’s world famous Quinta Avenida (5th Ave) when we heard an unfamiliar form of music. Kitxen (pictured left) is a local open air bar where people go to have a beverage and listen to some live music.
On this particular early evening, we stop in for a cool drink and see who was playing. The group Copal was performing on stage and had a sound that immediately caught my attention. I enjoyed the funky groove that includes multiple horn players, a mixture of percussions, guitars and vocals.
The two front-men bring a rap style sound with a Latin influence and funky flare. Copal has shown some degree of success since their beginning. They have gone on tour and shared stages with some very popular Latin bands such as Maldita Vecindad, Nortec Collective and Salon Acapulco to mention a few.
Copal recorded their first live in-studio session with Ritual Productora in 2014. This led to their debut album named “Funk Me” in 2016. This band of talented musicians in my prediction will go places. They have a very upbeat sound with an instrumental support that will appeal to almost anyone’s appetite wanting to have a fun time. You can dance and enjoy the charismatic entertainment that Julio and Cheche display while singing their Funkloric tunes.
