The two plus miles of Hickory Boulevard which just happens to be on Hickory Island, will again be our focal point. Continuing on with our Mailboxes with personality – part 2, we start with an appropriate structure that belongs on the water’s edge guiding in ships from far away lands! Lighthouses are a fetish of mine. I love them.
Can you guess what state we are in? You got it! Florida is labeled “The Sunshine State” and was the 27th state to join the union and is the 3rd most populated. It is the only mainland state that has tropical climate conditions. It is also the only state that borders both the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean.
This long legged bird could represent a variety of native fowl that call Florida home. It could be an Egret, Heron or an Ibis to mention just a few. Maybe the owner of this mailbox is a bird lover and/or watcher.
You can tie off your boat to this mailbox when delivering the mail. I bet the person who lives here (house shown below – right) either has or had a dock with a boat. Actually, it could have been a part of the their original dock before.
What would this fabulous stretch of road be if somebody didn’t have a Dolphin mailbox? Florida’s waters are filled with these loving aquatic mammals. The person(s) who lives in this home (shown below) must be a fan of the docile creature.
There are some truly beautiful homes up and down what the locals call ‘Millionaire’s Lane‘. They also have the Gulf of Mexico as part of their backyard. Being able to watch the sunset every evening would be awesome. Not a bad set up if I do say so myself.
This next mailbox is a little harder to comment on. Trying to describe its uniqueness would be rated “for adult only viewing”. I will let you make your own decision on what this homeowner is trying to point out! What would you say the owner of the home likes? Do mailboxes really have their own personalities?
Moving right along, this particular mailbox is a good likeness of an old dock worker or longshoreman. I wonder if this figurine plays into the owner of the home’s past? They could have spent time around the shipyards for part or all of their lives.
You can never have enough dolphin mailboxes. This one combines a plant and some sort of shell that sits atop the dolphin. I can’t even begin to define the person who came up with this rather odd concoction. They are creative…
Here is our last entry and don’t let the orange cone in the background fool you. This is not a danger zone. Lets take a wild stab at this one and say the owner likes kayaking! I wonder what gave it away! Or better yet, did he retire from this water going sport?
I hope you enjoyed this two part series on “Mailboxes with personality”. I found this particular article – part 1 and 2, to be a little different from any of the others I have written. Every once in awhile I hope to slide one or two of these off the wall article in on you.
